Laws of Inheritance

1865

Gregor Mendel, also known as the father of genetics made a breakthrough by breeding pea plants. By doing so, he created the basic laws of heredity and aided in the understanding towards how physical characteristics are passed down. 

Chemical Structure of DNA is Discovered 1953

Scientists from Cambridge University, Francis Crick and James Watson first discovered the spiral like, double helix shape of DNA. They announced their findings on April 25th and Watson later published the The Double Helix, revolutionizing biology and medicine forever.

First GMO Patent is Issued 

1980

A ruling was decided in the Supreme Court between General Electric and the U.S. Patent Office to decide for a patent on a living organism. The patent was then passed 5-4 successfully, authorizing a bacteria to make human insulin.

Asilomar Conference

1975

Guidelines about GMOs and recombinant DNA are discussed by biologists, lawyers, and  doctors for the public. The conference occurred in Monterey, California and was led by Paul Gerg.

GMOs Enter Grocery Stores

2009

The Flavr Savr tomato is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This tomato was engineered to extend shelf time, aiding in decrease of wasted produce by the company Celgene. Later, the Monsanto Company obtained the company after low profits.

BT Crops are Introduced

2003

Bt crops use Cry proteins to ward off pests from feasting upon agriculture, but however scientists realize some insects have acquired resistance in just less than a decade.

Domination of GMOs

Present

GMOs are commonly found in supermarkets today many including soy, corn, milk, sugar, and more. They also cover 100 million acres of land worldwide, production also increasing efficiently.

Genetically Modified Soybeans 

2010

Genetically modified soybeans are approved by the USDA, leading to 93% of soy today to be modified. This creation was developed by the powerhouse corporation, Monsanto.
